SOUND AND MUSIC THERAPY
The therapeutic Link between Sound, Music and healing is an ancient one, but was first recognized by Doctors in the late 19th century. Sound vibrates in waves at different Frequencies and influence both the Emotions and certain Physiological functions, such as heart rate and breathing. Even sounds and frequencies beyond the range of the human ear can have an impact. Practitioners use various approaches and work with the voice or electronic or musical instruments to generate sound waves, or to choose music, which restore balance in the Body and promote self-healing. Sound and Music Therapies were developed as a way of helping those with serious disabilities, mental illness, psychological distress, chronic Fatigue, etc. Making or responding to Music can provide a real alternative to verbal communication, enabling the expression of emotions that may be too profound or primitive for words. Within both complementary and conventional Medicine worldwide, particularly intensive care units and delivery rooms, patients are encouraged to listen to music to ease anxiety and pain, and to promote recovery. There are about 7,000 qualified Music Therapists in America.
